Obituary for Steven Frans Ericsson

Steven Frans Ericsson, age 71, born in East Orange, NJ, was a longtime resident of South Florida who passed away May 8, 2018.

At age 19 Steve enlisted into the US Army and became a Teletype Repairman with the 501st Signal Battalion, 101st Airborne Division. During his time in Vietnam he distinguished himself by playing a vital role in supporting all division units with teletype communications prior to any maintenance facilities being available and before the Signal Maintenance shop was fully established. He was also instrumental in establishing the Battalion’s Signal Maintenance shop at the Bien Hoas Base Camp and provided support to the 3rd Forward Area Signal Center Platoon of Company B which resulted in the successful provision of vital communications. These actions of exceptionally meritorious achievement and honorable service, which distinguished him apart from his comrades, earned him a National Defense Service Medal, an Army Commendation Medal and a Bronze Star. Upon returning home he continued in telecommunications working for NJ Bell Telephone until he moved to Alabama. While working at the Tennessee Valley Authority in Athens, AL he earned a certificate of appreciation for his outstanding service during an emergency shutdown of two nuclear reactors at the Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant. Steve concluded his career in telecommunications with TAD Technical Services in Cambridge Massachusetts, where he received many awards for outstanding performance in the telecommunications division. These accomplishments were never a topic of conversation but he was always happy to share about his children, his grandson, his adventures on his Harley, sailing in the BVIs or time spent with great friends. Steve was preceded in death by his son, Blake Lennart Ericsson on May 1, 2018 and his sister Barbara Ericsson Magid. He is survived by his daughter, Britt Ericsson Giannuzzi, son in law, Joseph Giannuzzi II, daughter in law, Vera Ericsson and grandson, Andre Ericsson. Services will be held at the South Florida National Cemetery, Lake Worth, Florida in Lane #1 at 2:30 pm on June 8, 2018. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Vera Ericsson, ℅ Paula Spofford PO Box 308, Conway, NH 03818. These contributions will be deposited in a college fund for Andre Ericsson his grandson; alternatively contributions may be made to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund.
