Obituary for Roger Lewis Gilde

Roger Gilde, age 79, passed away January 4 following an auto accident near his home in Greenacres, Florida. Roger was born to Irving and Ruth Gilde in Brooklyn, New York and spent most of his youth in Valley Stream and Long Beach, Long Island, New York.

Roger served in the U.S. Army, and later in the Reserves. Roger went on to study International Trade at the Latin American Institute in Mexico City. He worked in export sales for R.A. Rodriguez & Co. for many years before starting his own export and import company, Coltec, in operation for over 30 years. Roger met his wife Adrienne Harris during the early 60s' "beatnik era" in New York's Greenwich Village while playing his harmonica by the fountains in Washington Square Park. They were married in 1961 and welcomed son, Robert, in 1963 before moving to Flushing, NY.

In 1973, Roger and family joined eight others in an "intentional community"
in Demarest, New Jersey - featured in The New York Times In 1975. Upon their son leaving for college in Syracuse in 1981, they left the commune and moved to the upper west side of Manhattan for the next 15 years. In 1996 they moved to West Palm Beach, Florida where both Roger and Adrienne continued various aspects of their work while enjoying warmer weather.

Roger was active in community theater (directing and acting) and comedy writing in both New York and West Palm Beach. He and his wife were passionate about American musical theater. After winding down Coltec, he began a second career teaching and tutoring English as a Second Language (ESL), Spanish and other subjects through the Adult Education Center of Palm Beach, other schools, learning centers, and through private tutoring, and continued teaching until his death. Roger enjoyed many good years of tennis, travel, swimming, bad puns, friendships and, most of all, being dapper while loving to all.

He is survived by his son, Robert Gilde and his partner Robin Spicer of Issaquah, Washington, brother-in-law Jack Fischman of Long Island, New York, niece Lisa Weiss, her husband Marc, and their children Jacob and Hannah, and a host of friends, neighbors and acquaintances. He was proceeded in death by his wife, Adrienne Judith (Harris) Gilde, father Irving Gilde, mother Ruth
(Simon) Gilde, and sister Ellen Fischman.

No services will be held. In honor of Roger, the family suggests toasting him with a really good Manhattan, going to see a great play or supporting the arts in any fashion or, best of all, a simple moment of joy with those you love, call friend or soon-to-be-friend.
