Obituary for Robert Joseph Quinn

Just after midnight on March 3, 2018, Robert J. Quinn passed away peacefully at Treasure Coast Hospice in Stuart, FL.

Born September 26, 1941 to George Francis Quinn and Margaret (Peg) Higgins of Queens, New York, Robert (Bob) Quinn grew up in a large, loving family of eight. By all accounts, there were a few minor disagreements, one or two brotherly punching matches, and many treasured memories made along the way.

After graduating from Archbishop Curley High School in Miami, Bob joined the United States Air Force and began a 30-year career. Eighth-grade sweetheart, Kathy, and Bob married in 1967 and embraced Air Force life. Daughter, Kelly, and Son, Robert Jr. (Bobby) joined Kathy and Bob in adventures from Hawaii to Great Britain. The family enjoyed exploring natural wonders from the Grand Canyon to Verdon Gorge; historical sites, especially Roman Ruins (and please, Dad, not another cathedral!); watching Dad laugh at slapstick movies; and visiting family and friends. When Bob retired from the USAF as a decorated Lt. Colonel and settled in Stuart, FL, he began a second career in health care management with the Visiting Nurse Association of Florida.

Bob indulged his passion for sailing (born after frustration with a devious little game called golf led him to look for alternative hobbies), and he and Kathy became experienced sailors. A series of boats named “No Ka Oi” proved there was nothing finer than unfurling the sails. Bare boating in the Caribbean provided many opportunities to snorkel, sail, and enjoy an evening drink with friends under tropical skies. When Kathy retired from teaching middle schoolers to mind their P’s and Q’s, Bob was happy to relinquish his full-time role at the VNA and the couple embraced life on the road in a shiny, new RV. Bob and Kathy spent up to six months a year living aboard their Lazy Daze, Livhardo, traveling the highways and byways of the USA. Frequent stops to visit family and a growing cast of grandkids were some of Bob’s favorite times. Cookie breaks and trips to the ice cream parlor kept the grandkids close; and Bob was always on hand to provide a steady hand, good advice (the kind you should have taken), and guidance.

Bob embraced the opportunities offered during his globe-spanning career and followed Hunter S. Thompson’s advice that “Life should not be a journey to the grave the with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, ‘Wow! What a Ride!’”

Family includes Bob’s wife of over 50 years, Ann Kathleen (Kathy) Quinn (Yarber), Daughter, Kelly D. Quinn-Hughes (Greg) of Abbeville, SC; Son, Robert J. Quinn, Jr. (Lisa) of Tampa, FL; Grandchildren, Kristen M. Stammer, Paul J. Stammer (Kim), Gillian R. Hughes, Jack A. Quinn, and Cara L. Quinn; Great Grandson, Enzo K. Stammer; Siblings, George F. Quinn, Jr., deceased, (Carroll), William H. (Bill) Quinn (Kathee), Richard A. Quinn (Barbara), Margaret E. Burke (Ron), and Diane E. Hoffman (Bill); and many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Bob’s name to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society:
