Michael was born April 30, 1935 to Alice Brady O'Donovan and Denis O'Donovan in Union Hall, County Cork, Ireland. His childhood home (still home to the O'Donovan family) was known as "the Old Post Office," and retained its Dutch-door service counter entryway until the 1970s. Michael is survived by one of his five sisters, Martha Hedgecock, who lives in Sussex, England, his son Dennis and daughter in-law-Karen who live in Hobe Sound, FL; and grandson Evan O'Donovan, who resides in Brooklyn, NY. He is also survived by cousins in Ireland and the US, and by countless nieces and nephews who live in Ireland and England.

Michael was a chemist by trade, having worked for Peerless Oil early in his career, later starting his own petrochemical business, Elka Industrial, and finally working as a cosmetic and pharmaceutical chemist for Del Laboratories in Farmingdale, NY.

Michael was married twice, first to Catherine (Irene) Warren, and later to Sonya Scrocco, with whom he worked at Del Labs. He devoted his time to the care of his wife Sonya from 2010 to her passing in 2011, and to his ex-wife Irene during her illness, from 2012 to her passing in 2013. Michael, Irene and Sonya remained close friends for over 30 years, spending countless holidays and vacations together.

Michael was an avid reader and a lifelong student, studying physics, astronomy, boating and navigation. Such was his interest in boating and navigation that he attained high levels of certification as an instructor in the Captree Power Squadron in New York. He continued his pursuits when he moved from NY to Florida in 2010, quickly associating with the St. Lucie River Power Squadron. One of his proudest moments was having his picture appear in a NY newspaper (he was named in the photo caption as "this guy"), where he was practicing celestial navigation with his sextant on a cold Spring morning at a local beach.
