Obituary for Linda Fontanez Swain

Linda Dolores Fontanez Swain, 66 years young, peacefully went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at home in Fort Pierce surrounded by loved ones after a recent battle with Multiple Myeloma (bone marrow cancer). She was born in Queens, New York to Joseph and Aida Fontanez.

She was a resident of Fort Pierce since 1972, when she meet one of her closest friends, Ken Miller, later joined by his wife, Belle, who was often by her side. In April 1973, she met the love of her life, Bob Swain, and they married on November 23, 1973 making them a family of five with Randy, Robby and Gina, two years later Christy joined their adventures. The Swain family welcomed Linda with open hearts and arms, she was treated as though she was born into the family, which meant the absolute world to her. She was blessed with a solid friend, Sandy, who she laughingly met at Pantry Pride for TOPS.

Linda started working for the St. Lucie County School Board in 1978 as a Teacher's Aide, she found her passion working with ESOL students teaching them English. She spent many evenings in the field visiting families with her own kids. In 1980, she was named the FEA/United "Organizer of the Year" award. In June 1986, she was named a "Golden Apple" as a bilingual home/school liaison and instruction aide at St. Lucie and Fort Pierce Elementary. While working full time and raising a family, she started taking college classes in the evening. After THIRTEEN YEARS she earned her Associate's Degree in 1990 - with a 3.0 GPA, she was very proud of this accomplishment. In 1992, she started working at Manatee Elementary, where her co-workers became like family. April 1993, she was named as one of the top 5 finalist for School-Related Employee of the Year award. In 2008, she was named as the Manatee Academy School Related Employee of the Year. After over 33 years with St. Lucie County School Board and 19 years at Manatee Elementary, in December 2011, she retired.

Many summers were spent as a family on road trips and camping exploring many areas throughout the Eastern and Central United States. She especially looked forward to camping and tubing in Cherokee, North Carolina and Ocala, Florida. She also traveled often with and without family to Puerto Rico to visit the many extended family members. Bob "Big Boomer" and Linda "Latin Sunshine" enjoyed many BBQs with their CB friends.

She found pleasure in making things for loved ones ... crocheting blankets, bookmarks, mirrors and baby socks, sewed pot holder towels, quilling pictures, and creating dream catchers. She kept very detailed calendars with daily activities, including birthdays, anniversaries and even when they moved into their house. Her thoughtfulness was easily seen in the many cards she adorned with stickers.

Linda enjoyed many things during her life, including clogging, crocheting, TOPS, camping, playing backgammon, scrabble, playing cards, watching live flamenco dancers, playing her castanets (percussion instrument), and volunteering for Family Meals. She spent the last 11 years cheering for Christy and others during half marathons, she was known for her big red hat, pom poms, cow bells and enthusiastic cheers.

Her absolute joy in life was her grandchildren, near and far. She treasured her time with them, and made them the focus. She was meticulous in finding the perfect gifts for them.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Robert Lee Swain; 4 children, Randy (Lori) Swain of Waxahachie, Texas; Robby (Rita) Swain of Port St. Lucie, Florida; Gina (Ray) Conway of Evening Shade, Arkansas; and Christy (Santiago) Lopez of Port St. Lucie, Florida.
