Obituary for Joan S. Powell Miller

Joan Powell Miller passed away peacefully on June 8, 2017, while under Hospice Care in Boynton Beach, Florida. She was 92 years of age.

Joan was born in London, England on February 16, 1925 to Ruben and Marion Saunders. She was one of ten children. Joan worked for the British Ministry of Supply during World War II. She met an American Navy Corpsman, Richard Grant Powell, during the war. They were married in Ohio in December of 1946. They had three children. Richard passed away in 1955.

Joan worked in various secretarial positions in Ohio, and later in Florida, after moving her family to Palm Beach County in 1960. She was predeceased by her husband, Omer Miller of Jensen Beach, Florida and Cloverdale, Indiana, whom she married in 1989.

Joan previously attended First United Methodist Church in Stuart, Florida, where she was a member of the choir. She was a longtime member of Lake Worth Presbyterian Church in Lake Worth, Florida.

Joan is survived by her three children: Janet (Steve) Graves of Grand Junction, CO; David (Jeanette) Powell of Bacova, VA; John (Elise) Powell of Lantana, FL; one grandson, Brandt Graves of Brooklyn, NY; one granddaughter, Ranette Leiva and great granddaughter, Nichole DeBell both of Atlamonte Springs, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews in the US, England and Australia. She leaves her beloved cat, Samantha, and John’s dog, Little Dude.

Joan had a great love of flowers. She was known by many, as the “Flower Lady”. She will be missed by her family and many dear friends.

A Memorial Service to celebrate her life will take place at Del Lago Chapel, 131 S. Lakeside Drive, Lake Worth, FL 33460. A reception will follow in the Banquet Hall of Del Lago Chapel.

Joan will be laid to rest alongside her husband, Richard in Union Cemetery, Steubenville, OH.
Her family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Wounded Warriors, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256, Trustbridge (Hospice), 5300 East Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL 33407 or First Presbyterian Church, 231 North Federal Highway, Lake Worth, FL 33460.
