Obituary for David Miles Runkel

David Miles Runkel
Born March 11, 1931
David died peacefully at Trustbridge Hospice - Palm Beach Medical Center - Palm Beach Gardens Florida on August 24, 2017 at the age of 86. Preceded in death by his wife Joan of 62 years in May of this year.
He is survived by immediate family, Brother, James Runkel and Wife Denise of New Port Richey, Florida, Sister, Janet Anderson and Husband Burt of Northbrook, Ill, Sister Nancy Lofye of Plano, Tx. and Nephew Mark Noble and Wife Sharon of Pleasant Prairie, Wi.,and many Nieces and Nephews.
Dave Graduated from high school at the prestigious Culver Military Academy, Culver, Indiana in 1949. He attended Rippon College, Rippon Wisconsin and graduated 1954 with an BA Degree, Majoring in Economics.
Dave was commissioned as a 2nd LT in the Army Reserve the same year. He entered active duty in March 1955 and completed his Basic Infantry Officers Coarse, Ft Benning, Ga. graduating the same year. After Primary and Advanced Aviation training Dave was permanently stationed at Ft Gordon, Ga. Assigned to the Southern Signal Training Center in 1956. He was released from Active Duty in October 1958 with an Honorable Discharge.
After discharge he and his wife Joan moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida where he worked in the Aviation Industry, and got his start in the Savings & Loan business.
In Ft. Lauderdale he was also a member and President of S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. a barbershop singing organization and formed his own barbershop quartet.
In 1964 he was offered the position of Director of Public Relations for Community Federal Savings and Loan, Rivera, Beach, Florida and eventually was promoted to Marketing Vice President, finally retiring in 1993.
Dave was active in community affairs. A member of the Palm Beach County Government Study Commission, sub-committee, on Taxing Districts 1967, President of NPB County Chamber of Commerce 1967/68, and President of Rivera Beach Kiwanis Club 1983/84.
He was a Charter Member – Gardens Lodge #366, Free and Accepted Masons (Blue Lodge, 3rd Degree)
Member - Lake Worth, Florida, Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, S.J., USA – 32 Degree
Member – Amara Temple AAONMS of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida
Dave and his wife Joan were avid golfers. They won many tournaments together as husband and wife around the Palm Beach area. They were both members of North Palm Beach Country Club.
Dave will be sorely missed by family and friends alike.
