Obituary for Chester M. Bernstein

Chester M. Bernstein, MD, age 92 of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida and a former long-time resident of New Britain, Connecticut passed away in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida on June 6, 2017, the 73 anniversary of D-Day.

He was born in New York City, and enlisted in the United States Army in 1943. He was part of the Allied occupation of Marseilles, France in 1945-1946, and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. After being honorably discharged from the Army he attended New York University, where he was admitted to the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. He attended New York Medical College and became a Doctor of Internal Medicine in 1954. He was an Intern at Flower and Fifth Avenue Hospitals in New York. He was appointed as the Chief Resident of New Britain General Hospital (Hospital of Central Connecticut), where he maintained hospital privileges until his retirement in the early 1990's. He joined the medical practice of Alexander E. Bayer, and maintained his own practice in New Britain after Dr. Bayer’s retirement. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Connecticut State Medical Society, and the Hartford County (Connecticut) Medical Association since 1960.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 17 years Edith (Edie) Bernstein. He is survived by his wife of 48 years Anita G. Bernstein, his sons LCDR Robert I. Bernstein (USCG, Ret.), David J. Bernstein, Ph.D., his daughters Pamela Wass and Diane Kutschera, 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
