Charles “Chic” R. Engle

Vero Beach, Florida

Charles “Chic” R. Engle, 96, of Vero Beach, Florida passed away on Friday July 28, 2017 at Indian River Hospital, Vero Beach, Florida.

He was the sixth sibling of twelve children of W.P. and Amelia (Schwendeman) Engle, and was born on June 23rd, 1921 in Lowell, Ohio.

Charles joined the Army Air Corps on July 30th, 1940. He served honorably as a “Flight Officer.” He was presented with many decorations and awards for bravely serving and successfully completing his missions with the 318th Fighter Group in North Africa and Italy from the months of January 3rd, 1943 to November 15th, 1943. The awards received were the European African Eastern Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars, the World War II Victory Medal, Air Medal with seven Oak Leaf Clusters, Presidential Unit Citation Badge, and an American Defense Service Medal. He was honorably discharged on January 23rd, 1945 as Flight Officer by Army of the United States.

Upon his return to Ohio, Charles attended Marietta College where he later graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Literary Studies in 1950. He went on to work for The Airolite Company as Sales Purchasing Manager and after 27 years, retired in 1978.

Charles was married to Martha M. (Nolan) Engle by a Catholic Military Chaplain on November 4th, 1942 in the city of Manchester, New Hampshire. They were married for 75 years.

Charles was an avid golfer. He won many tournaments, including the Marietta Country Club Championship. He also enjoyed gardening, reading, and the occasional fishing trip. A true lover of college football, he was a loyal Ohio State Buckeye and Notre Dame fan.

Charles was preceded in death by his two sons Jeffrey Engle and Bradley Engle. He is survived by his wife Martha M. Engle and his children Phillip Engle, Michael (Carole Ann) Engle, Sue (Bruce) Quimby, and Charles (Donna) Engle Jr. Charles is also survived by his grandchildren Carma Schilling, Jessica Susi, Leon Engle, Aaron Engle, Meredith Quimby, and many other cherished great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family. In addition to his sons, he was preceded in death by his grandchildren Alexx Engle and Jennifer Engle.

Services will be held at 10:00AM on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at St. John of the Cross Catholic Church, 7590 26th St., Vero Beach, Florida 32966 with Father Massaro officiating a mass and "A reception to follow at Charles and Martha's previous address at 6465 36th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32966."burial with full military honors will be held the Saturday of the Engle Reunion next summer of 2018. Date to be announced.
